Humeral Fracture Braces – Sarmiento Style Supports – Healing Information
66Humeral Fractures and Healing - Starts With Information First
1.) Bracing The Humerus After A Fracture
Braces for the humerus, such as a sarmiento style orthosis (brace) are used when there has been a fracture of the upper arm. When we talk about the “upper arm” we are referencing the humerus in this article. In this free information we will discuss the benefits of this kind of support and some of experiences the patient can expect to have while using this type of support.
2.) Emergency Room Splint Vs. Sarmiento Brace
Many times after an injury to the humerus you will be put into a temporary mold that will hold the arm until some of the swelling has subsided. In addition, you may follow up with your physician after being in an ER setting to determine the next course of action after a humeral fracture. – After having followed up with your physician, they may require for you to obtain a humeral fracture orthosis (brace). A commonly used humeral fracture brace is known as a “Sarmiento” brace.
For midshaft humeral fractures, this brace can help provide support, pain relief, a sense of security and peace of mind. – A sarmiento humeral fracture brace typically consists of a two piece design. This design can be referred to as a "clam shell" or "bivalve" design by some clinicians. Typically there is about 1/8” of padding and 1/8” of plastic that makes up the brace. When it forms a cylinder around your arm and is made snug, it will become stronger as a result of the two pieces coming together.
Depending on the severity of the break, you may have to wear this brace for 6 weeks or longer. It all comes down to how fast you heal and what your physician deems necessary. Everyone’s situation is different so it is not easy, or fair to you, to make up a number of weeks and claim this to be true for all patients with humeral fractures.
3.) Important Questions For Your Physician When It Comes To Your Brace
Important questions that you need to ask your physician are :
How long do I have to wear the brace?
For what activity levels should I wear my new Sarmiento brace?
What do I do when I want to take a shower?
Do you recommend I clean my arm another way than getting in the shower?
What will happen is that you may ask your orthopedic brace provider this information and you may also ask your physician this information as well. Even with best intentions, the stories will never be 100 percent the same between these two partiies, so it is best to ask you physician the questions above.
